Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls

I’ve always been particular about sweet and sour sauce—probably because I have a vivid memory of one that completely stole my heart years ago. Ever since, I’ve been on the hunt to recreate that perfect balance of sweet, sour, and savory—with a little peppery kick. Most takeout versions didn’t quite get it right. So, after many trials in my kitchen, I created a version that finally brought that nostalgic flavor to life in the form of these Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls.

What is Sweet and Sour Chicken

Sweet and Sour Chicken typically features battered and fried chicken tossed in a glossy, tangy sauce. The sauce usually combines sugar and vinegar for a bright flavor, balanced by the richness of ketchup or fruit juice.

In this version, Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls, we skip the deep-frying and breading. Instead, we use flavorful chicken meatballs—juicy, tender, and packed with simple ingredients. If you prefer unbreaded chicken breast chunks instead, check out our Roasted Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe for another wholesome variation.

What Does Sweet and Sour Chicken Taste Like

Sweet and Sour Chicken is all about balance. The sweetness (from sugar, juice, or fruit) meets the tart punch of vinegar to create a vibrant, crave-worthy flavor. The pineapple adds a fresh burst of juiciness, while the variety of peppers gives it a savory depth that rounds it all out.

What to Serve with Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls

We love this recipe served over basmati rice—the fluffiness soaks up the sauce beautifully. For extra fiber, try it with brown rice. If you want to add more greens, steamed broccoli is a perfect match. Because this version includes both pineapple and peppers, it makes a complete dish on its own.

Is Sweet and Sour Chicken Gluten-Free?

Traditional Sweet and Sour Chicken often isn’t gluten-free due to the breading and soy-based sauces. In this recipe, the chicken meatballs contain breadcrumbs, which can be swapped for a gluten-free version.
For a fully gluten-free alternative, try our Roasted Sweet and Sour Chicken—no swaps needed!

Substitutions and Alternatives

Air Fryer Sweet and Sour Chicken

Want a crispy edge with less oil? Cook the meatballs in an air fryer, then toss them with the sauce.

Sweet and Sour Chicken (Gluten-Free)

Use gluten-free breadcrumbs or substitute the meatballs with plain grilled chicken breast.

How to Make Sweet and Sour Chicken Sauce

Most classic sweet and sour sauces use ketchup and cornstarch, but this version offers something different. It blends soy sauce, pineapple juice, garlic, rice vinegar, white sugar, and orange juice, simmered to a tangy reduction. Butter is added at the end for richness.

Why no ketchup? Honestly, I was chasing a flavor from memory—one without the heaviness of ketchup or a thick slurry. This sauce feels lighter, brighter, and more homemade.

Freezing Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls

  2. Store in a freezer-safe bag labeled “Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls.”
