When Faith Feels Distant: Rebuilding Your Connection with God

Feeling Distant from God? How to Rebuild Your Faith & Connection

Have you ever felt like God is far away, even when you’re trying to seek Him? I have. And if you have too, you're not alone."

Bible Verses for Reconnecting with God

  • Psalm 32:8 – I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Does Feeling Distant from God Mean He’s Abandoned You?

Why Does Faith Feel Distant? Understanding Spiritual Dry Seasons

Is it normal to feel distant from God? Yes, and it’s okay to feel that way. Throughout life, we will experience ups and downs—circumstances that challenge our connection with the Lord. Whether it's life stressors, doubts, frustration, internal struggles like anxiety or depression, or even external influences such as social media, relationships, or world events, these things can create a sense of separation from Him. Making trusting God in hard times difficult.

Often, we believe God is distant because He is angry, because we’ve sinned, or because He no longer cares. But the truth is, God never moves away from us—we are the ones who, knowingly or unknowingly, allow barriers to form between us and Him.

In the past few months, I found myself asking my husband, “Why can’t I hear God?” and “How do we know when God is speaking to us?” I was struggling to feel His presence, and instead of turning to the Lord with my questions, I turned to my husband.

Now, there is wisdom in seeking guidance from others. My husband could offer advice based on what he’s learned at church, from Scripture, or through conversations with other believers. But ultimately, God is the source of truth. Instead of seeking Him first, I was looking to the world for an answer.

Looking back, I realized my impatience played a role. I wanted instant clarity, a quick response, a sign that God was working. But when I didn’t get the answers I wanted, I let frustration creep in. I started worrying about tomorrow instead of trusting God with today.

In doing so, I built a wall—perhaps not a solid one, but a barrier, nonetheless.

The problem wasn’t that I asked my husband; it was why I asked him. Deep down, I doubted whether God would answer me. I was frustrated with His timing and anxious about the future.

The reality is, when we take our eyes off the Lord, that’s when He starts to feel distant. But the beautiful truth? He hasn’t gone anywhere. When we turn back to Him, He is always there, ready to guide us back into His presence.

So, if you feel distant from God, take a moment to reflect—are you seeking Him first? He is near, waiting for you to turn your eyes back to Him and trust him.

God is always present, even in silent seasons.

When barriers go up, we feel distant from the Lord—but that distance is never from His side. Even in the quiet, even when He seems silent, He is there. Always and forever.

I know how hard it can be to believe this in the midst of overwhelming emotions. How can we reconnect with God when life feels heavy? When circumstances seem stronger than your faith, when you feel lost, alone, and out of control—it’s easy to wonder where God is.

But He is with you.

He sees you. He knows your heart, your struggles, and your pain. Even when you can’t feel Him, He is working behind the scenes, guiding you through both the good and the hard.

Hold on. Even in the silence, He is near.

How to Rebuild Your Faith Step by Step

Why Do I Feel Distant from God? Identifying the Barriers

If you feel distant from God, you’re not alone. Every one of us experiences this at some point. And the reason why? It’s different for everyone. Sometimes it’s a familiar struggle, something we’ve faced before. Other times, it’s new—something we never expected to create space between us and Him.

Maybe life feels overwhelming right now. Maybe you’re exhausted from carrying more than you thought possible. It could be a busy season, a deep hurt, a lingering doubt, or a burden that feels too heavy to bring before God. The truth is, anything—becoming a new parent, losing a job, battling addiction, struggling with depression, or simply getting caught up in the day-to-day—can slowly pull our focus away from Him.

And when that happens, we start to feel the distance.

But here’s the good news: God hasn’t gone anywhere. He’s still near, still loving you, still waiting with open arms.

To help you explore what might be creating this distance, I’ve created a free worksheet, Identifying What’s Creating the Distance with God. It’s not about shame or guilt—it’s about understanding. It will walk you through a series of thoughtful questions to help you recognize what might be pulling at your heart and why God might feel far away.

I’ve found that the answer is often layered. For example:

“My schedule is busy.” → But what about my busy schedule is making me feel disconnected?

§  Have I stopped praying, or do I find myself rushing through it?

§  Am I carrying frustration or disappointment with God?

§  Am I feeling so overwhelmed that I’ve shut down?

§  Am I silently waiting for an answer and growing weary in the waiting?

§  Am I so consumed by everything else that I feel like I just don’t have time for Him?

The goal isn’t to have all the answers. It’s to bring your heart before Him, just as you are - ready to turn to him again.

God isn’t far. He sees you. He loves you. And He’s always ready to draw you close.

How to Rebuild Your Faith Without Feeling Overwhelmed

When you’re feeling distant from God, reconnecting with Him can seem like a lot. Your mind might start racing, listing everything you think you should be doing. And before you know it, the overwhelm sets in, adding to everything else you’re already carrying.

Rebuilding faith isn’t about doing everything at once.

Think of it like a puzzle, made up of many different pieces—some big, some small. The best part? There’s no required order. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you begin.

Reconnecting with God can start with something simple:

  • If going to church on Sunday feels like it’s too much right now, try turning on an online sermon.  You can listen from the comfort of your home, during breakfast, or as you go about your morning.
  • If remembering to pray first thing in the morning feels difficult, start with a daily verse calendar—flip to the day's verse, read it, and take in the Word of the Lord
  • If a full Bible study feels draining right now, start with a single-page devotional
  • If opening your bible feels overwhelming, start by following a page that shares God’s word. Sometimes all it takes is on post to remind you He’s near

Every step—no matter the size—draws you closer to Him. You don’t have to overhaul your life to rebuild your faith. Just start where you are.

Invite God Into Everyday Life, Not Just ‘Spiritual Moments’

God calls us to set time aside for Him, and in the section above, we looked at a few ways to do that—each one different in size and shape. But if that still feels overwhelming right now, your journey back to Him doesn’t have to start with structured time. It can start right where you are.

God isn’t only found in quiet devotional time or Sunday services. He is in your everyday moments, too.

You can talk to Him while you’re driving, standing in line at the store, washing dishes, or folding laundry. Whisper a thought to Him while rocking a baby to sleep, walking in the cold air, or even while cooking dinner. It doesn’t have to be a long, formal prayer—it can be just a sentence.

  • “Lord, I know You’re here.”
  • “God, I need You today.”
  • “Thank You for this moment.”
  • “God, I am working on it”
  • “Lord, fill me with you”

No matter how small, He hears you. And over time, those small moments will grow into more.

You don’t have to wait for the perfect time or the perfect words. Just bring Him into your life as it is, right now. He is already there, waiting for you.
