How I’m Rebuilding Strength & Mobility in My 40s (From the Ground Up)

Starting From the Ground Up: My Mobility & Strength Journey

I’m writing this at the very beginning of my mobility and strength journey—before the transformation, before the “after” photo, before I’ve even figured out what my daily strength and mobility workouts will be.

And I’m doing that intentionally.

Because this part—the start—is just as important as the finish line. I don’t want to skip over the hard days or forget what it felt like to begin. I want to share the middle, not just the results.

Learning to Move Again

I’m in my early 40s, carrying over 100 pounds more than what used to be my “average” weight. And truthfully, I’m in a body I don’t recognize anymore.

Simple things I once did without thinking—like walking—now come with pain or stiffness. Some days I’m okay. Other days, I get a quarter mile in and everything hurts.

About a year ago, I went to physical therapy for my knee. That’s where I learned something that stuck with me:

You don’t have to jump into hard workouts to make progress.
Sometimes, you just have to start small—and let your body rebuild from there.

You Can Be Strong… and Still Need to Start Small

My physical therapist told me about a bodybuilder she treated—someone who could lift 100-pound weights without breaking a sweat. But due to chronic pain, she had him start lifting just 2-pound weights.

Why?

Because it wasn’t about how strong he looked—it was about rebuilding the small, often ignored muscles that were causing the pain.

That story hit home for me. Turns out, my hip was weak. Really weak. And it was putting stress on my knee every day.

I followed the PT plan, and now? My knee still gets sore sometimes, but it’s no longer hurting 24/7.

That progress gave me hope—but my journey didn’t stop there.

The Aches That Remain… and What I Want for the Future

I still have foot pain, stiff joints, and weak ankles. My whole body often feels tight and worn out. But I’ve learned something valuable:

Strength isn’t found in pushing through pain. It’s found in rebuilding what’s been neglected—with grace and consistency.

In the long run, I want to:

  • Get off the ground without struggling
  • Walk without pain
  • Strengthen my back and hips
  • Age with strength, not fear

That begins now—with small, awkward steps and uncomfortable stretches. Working the muscles I’ve ignored, gently and steadily.

If You're in a Body You Don’t Understand—You’re Not Alone

If you’re like me—stuck somewhere between frustration and hope, unsure where to begin—I want to remind you that beginnings matter.

You’re not behind.
You’re not broken.
You’re just at the beginning.

And that’s a powerful place to be.

Let’s walk this road slowly, gently, and together.

Share Your First Step

This space isn’t just about my story—it’s about all of ours.

If you’re starting (or restarting) your own journey toward mobility, strength, or healing, I’d love to hear what that first step looks like for you. Maybe it’s doing ankle rolls at your desk, stretching in the morning, or simply acknowledging the pain you’re in.
